Slot 2 accepts an x8 card physically but only one electrical lane runs to it, so a 10 Gigabit adapter dropped in there is throttled by the slot rather than the network. Choosing the Right ML310e Gen8 v2 Network Adapter

  • Decide what happens to the shared port first. One embedded port doubles as iLO, so a two-port Gigabit card is often bought simply to give management a port of its own.
  • Put 10 Gigabit in slot 3 or slot 4. The PCIe 2.0 slots run a single lane each, whatever their connectors suggest.
  • Budget the slot against the controller. A Smart Array card and a 10 Gigabit adapter both want a PCIe 3.0 slot, and this server only has two.
  • Cables and transceivers are separate. The 10 Gigabit cards listed here are SFP+, so direct attach copper for short runs or transceivers and fibre for longer ones are bought apart from the adapter.
  • A quad-port Gigabit card is often the better answer. For a branch-office tower, four copper ports usually beat one 10 Gigabit link that the rest of the site cannot feed.
