Redundancy works differently on an entry 1U than on the larger ProLiants: this chassis has a single power supply bay, so a redundant build is a power backplane carrying up to two AC power input modules, and HPE makes that backplane mandatory with the module.

  • Failover behaviour: redundant AC power input modules do not share power — module 1 is the primary and module 2 is the backup
  • Mixing: not supported. All power supplies must be of the same input voltage, output rating and efficiency rating, or the server can report an error or behave unpredictably
  • Cooling: three hot-swap fans on a non-redundant single-processor server and five with fan redundancy, rising to four and six respectively once a second processor is fitted

A second power supply will not make this server redundant. The DL60 Gen9 has one power supply bay, so redundancy means an RPS power backplane carrying up to two AC power input modules — and HPE makes that backplane mandatory with the module. The modules do not share load either: module 1 is primary, module 2 is the backup.

Usually yes, and it is the thing that catches people out. A DL60 Gen9 running a single 550W supply cannot be made redundant by buying a second one, because the chassis has one supply bay and redundancy here means the backplane and the modules that mount on it. Where the backplane is already fitted, a second matching module finishes the job. And because the modules do not share load, a redundant pair is failover rather than extra capacity — size one module against the whole build.

Choosing the Right DL60 Gen9 Power Supply

  • Read the label on the installed unit first. Input voltage, output rating and efficiency rating all have to match across the server, so what is fitted today is the specification.
  • Redundancy needs the backplane, not just a second module. HPE documents the RPS power backplane as mandatory with the power input module.
  • Size against one module, not two. The pair does not share load, so the primary module alone has to carry the configuration.
  • Count the processors and the drives. Two 105W processors and four spinning drives is a different budget from a single entry CPU, and HPE publishes a Power Advisor for sizing a specific configuration.
  • Fans are ordered separately from power. The -B21 second-processor kits bring the extra fans a two-processor build needs, while moving from non-redundant to redundant cooling takes the redundant fan kit, which carries two fans.
