Rank decides where the speed drops. On E5-2600 v4 processors a single-rank RDIMM steps down from 2400 to 2133 MT/s at two DIMMs per channel and to 1866 at three; dual-rank RDIMMs hold 2400 to two per channel, then fall to 1866. The 64GB quad-rank and 128GB octal-rank LRDIMMs hold 2400 MT/s at three per channel — the only parts that fill 24 slots without a step-down.
How far does DL380 Gen9 memory speed drop as the channels fill?

Two things move the number. Rank is one: a single-rank RDIMM steps down at two DIMMs per channel, while the LRDIMMs hold 2400 MT/s all the way to three. The processor is the other, and it caps everything above it — an E5-2603 v4 or E5-2609 v4 runs memory at 1866 MT/s whatever DIMM is fitted.
Choosing the Right DL380 Gen9 Memory
- Check the processor before the DIMM. HPE rates E5-2603 and E5-2609 parts lowest, the E5-2620 to E5-2640 class a tier up, and E5-2643 and above at the family maximum.
- Filling every slot costs speed on RDIMMs. Three per channel drops an E5-2600 v4 server to 1866 MT/s; only LRDIMMs fill 24 slots at full rate.
- Population order matters. Fill white slots first for one DIMM per channel, balance capacity across both processors, and put the heaviest-ranked DIMM furthest from the processor.
- Do not reuse older HPE memory. HPE states memory from previous generation servers is not compatible with the DL380 Gen9, and that SmartMemory is required for the documented performance.

How many DIMM slots does the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 have?
Twenty-four - twelve per processor, four memory channels per processor and three DIMM slots per channel. If only one processor is installed, only half of the slots are available; both processors must be fitted to reach all 24.
What is the maximum RAM in a DL380 Gen9?
HPE quotes 3TB from 24 x 128GB LRDIMMs at 2400MHz and 768GB from 24 x 32GB RDIMMs at 2400MHz. NVDIMM configurations top out at 128GB from 16 x 8GB modules. The 128GB LRDIMM cannot be mixed with other capacities or DIMM types.
Why does my DL380 Gen9 memory run slower when every slot is filled?
Because the third DIMM on a channel forces a step-down. On E5-2600 v4 processors, RDIMMs drop from 2400 to 1866 MT/s at three DIMMs per channel, and single-rank RDIMMs already drop to 2133 at two per channel. The 64GB and 128GB LRDIMMs hold 2400 MT/s at three per channel.
Can I mix RDIMMs and LRDIMMs in a DL380 Gen9?
No. HPE states that RDIMM and LRDIMM are distinct memory technologies and cannot be mixed within a server, and that mixing 2133 and 2400MHz DIMMs is not supported either. DIMMs of different speeds that are otherwise compatible run at a common optimal speed.
Does the processor limit DL380 Gen9 memory speed?
Yes, and it is the hard ceiling. HPE lists E5-2609 v4 and E5-2603 v4 at 1866 MT/s, the E5-2620 v4 class at 2133 MT/s and the E5-2643 v4 and above at 2400 MT/s. The v3 equivalents sit one tier lower at 1600, 1866 and 2133 MT/s.
Will memory from an older HPE ProLiant fit the DL380 Gen9?
No. This is a DDR4 platform, and HPE states that memory from previous generation servers is not compatible with the DL380 Gen9 and that certain SmartMemory features such as memory authentication may not be supported.
