HPE ProLiant DL360p Gen8 Drives

HPE ProLiant DL360p Gen8 Drives

Genuine HPE hot-plug drives for the HPE ProLiant DL360p Gen8, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. Bay count is set at build time — 8 SFF with an optical bay, 10 SFF without one, or 4 LFF — and LFF is not an upgradeable option from SFF, or the reverse.

DL360p Gen8 Drive Specifications

  • Bays: 8 SFF hot-plug plus optical bay as standard; 4 LFF with optical or 10 SFF without as CTO alternatives; no drives ship standard
  • Carriers: Gen8 SmartDrive (SC) carriers with status, activity and Do Not Remove indicators; LFF SC Converter carriers take 2.5-inch drives in 3.5-inch bays; blanks 666987-B21 / 666986-B21
  • Interfaces: 12G SAS, 6G SAS and 6G SATA hard drives and SSDs — note the embedded Smart Array P420i is a 6Gb/s controller
  • Documented maximums: 20.0TB SFF SAS or SATA (10 × 2TB), 32.0TB LFF (4 × 8TB with the optional cage), 19.2TB SFF SAS SSD (10 × 1.92TB), 16.0TB SFF SATA SSD (10 × 1.6TB)
  • SSD endurance classes: Write Intensive, Mixed Use and Read Intensive, plus Enterprise Mainstream, Value, Light and Boot families in SAS and SATA

The backplane was chosen at build time. A DL360p Gen8 ships as 8 SFF bays with an optical bay, 10 SFF without one, or 4 LFF — and LFF is not an upgradeable option from SFF, or the reverse. Internal maximums are 20.0TB on ten 2TB SFF drives, 32.0TB on four 8TB LFF drives and 19.2TB on ten 1.92TB SFF SAS SSDs.

What drives fit the DL360p Gen8?

Drive familyInterfaceSpeeds and classesCapacities listed
Enterprise hard drives12G SAS15K and 10K, SFF and LFF300GB to 1.8TB
Enterprise hard drives6G SAS15K and 10K, SFF146GB to 1.2TB
Midline hard drives12G / 6G SAS, 6G SATA7.2K, 512e on the larger parts500GB to 8TB
Solid state drives6G SATAWI, MU, RI, Mainstream, Value, Light, Boot80GB to 1.6TB
Solid state drives12G SASRead/Write Intensive, Mainstream, Value200GB to 1.92TB

12G SAS drives are listed here, but the embedded P420i runs at 6Gb/s: HPE's note is that drive, controller, firmware and backplane should run at the same rate or the subsystem negotiates down. Our SAS versus SATA guide and the SmartDrive carrier history cover the rest.

Choosing the Right DL360p Gen8 Drives

  • Know which backplane you bought. A 10 SFF machine trades the optical bay for two more drives; the 4 LFF chassis is deeper, at 29.5 inches.
  • Match endurance to the workload. Write Intensive suits heavy write duty, Mixed Use virtualization and databases, Read Intensive and Value Endurance read-heavy serving — see the WI, MU and RI comparison.
  • Keep each array uniform. Mixing interfaces, spindle speeds or endurance classes leaves it running to its weakest member.
  • Order blanks with a partial fill. Pre-configured models arrive with six or seven SFF blanks; more are a separate part.
  • Check the warranty per drive. HPE states hard drives carry a one or three year warranty, with 7.2K Midline parts generally the one-year models.

DL360p Gen8 Drives FAQ

How many drives does the HPE ProLiant DL360p Gen8 hold?
It depends on the backplane. The standard build has 8 SFF hot-plug bays plus an optical drive bay; HPE also offers a 10 SFF version without the optical bay and a 4 LFF version with one, both configure-to-order. No hard drives ship standard.

Can I convert a DL360p Gen8 from SFF to LFF drive bays?
No. The QuickSpecs state plainly that LFF versions are not an upgradeable option from SFF models, or vice versa. The 4 LFF chassis is also 29.5 inches deep against 27.5 inches for the SFF versions.

What is the maximum internal storage of the DL360p Gen8?
HPE lists 20.0TB from ten 2TB SFF SAS or SATA hard drives and 32.0TB from four 8TB LFF drives with the optional cage. On solid state, 19.2TB from ten 1.92TB SFF SAS SSDs and 16.0TB from ten 1.6TB SFF SATA SSDs.

What carrier do DL360p Gen8 drives use?
The Gen8 SmartDrive (SC) carrier. HPE re-designed the hot-plug carriers for Gen8 in both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch form, with status, activity and Do Not Remove indicators, so a drive needs an SC carrier to seat in this backplane. LFF SC Converter carriers take a 2.5-inch drive in a 3.5-inch bay.

Can the DL360p Gen8 use 12G SAS drives?
Yes - 12G SAS hard drives and SSDs are listed for this server. Keep in mind the embedded Smart Array P420i runs at 6Gb/s, and HPE notes the subsystem negotiates down to the slowest component among drive, controller, firmware and backplane.

Do DL360p Gen8 drives come with a warranty?
HPE states hard drives carry either a one year or three year warranty depending on the drive, and points to the specific drive QuickSpecs. Enterprise and SSD parts are generally three-year models, 7.2K Midline parts one-year.
