This is the four-socket blade of the Gen8 line: it takes two or four Intel Xeon E5-4600 series processors, one and three processor configurations are not supported, and every kit listed here contains two processors rather than one.

Two or four processors — never one, never three. Every kit for this blade contains two processors, so a four-socket build is two kits of the same part and all of them must be identical. Each processor also brings eight DIMM slots with it, which is why filling the blade is as much a memory decision as a core-count one.

Four sockets change the arithmetic on every one of these parts: a fully populated blade of E5-4650s is 32 cores, and even the four-core E5-4603 reaches sixteen. The processor also governs the memory clock, so the cheapest kit in the range quietly pins a terabyte of DDR3 at 1066MHz. HPE's own speed table lists the E5-4617 and the E5-4607 in two different rows; where a part appears twice, plan on the lower of the two figures.

Choosing the Right BL660c Gen8 Processor

  • All processors in the blade must be identical. HPE does not support mixing models, so a four-processor build is two kits of the same part number.
  • Count in pairs, never in ones. One and three processor configurations are not supported, and the kits are sold as two processors, so an upgrade step on this blade is always two sockets wide.
  • A second pair unlocks the other sixteen DIMM slots. Slots attached to an empty socket are unavailable, which is often the real reason to fill the blade rather than the core count.
  • Hyper-Threading is not universal. The E5-4617 carries none, which matters more than its 2.9GHz clock on a virtualised host.
  • Know which kit you are buying. HPE built four-processor blades from one factory-install -L21 kit plus one -B21 kit; the kits listed here are the -B21 parts.
