HPE ProLiant BL460c G7 Memory
Genuine HPE DDR3 memory for the HPE ProLiant BL460c G7, new and refurbished. The blade carries twelve DIMM slots — six per processor, three channels with two slots on each — and the first of HPE's population rules is the one that decides the order: do not mix Unbuffered memory with Registered memory.
BL460c G7 Memory Specifications
- Type: DDR3 Registered (RDIMM) or Unbuffered (UDIMM), PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) and PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066), including PC3L low-voltage parts
- Slots: twelve, as three channels per processor with two DIMM slots on each channel; with only one processor installed, half the slots are unavailable
- Maximum registered: 384GB on twelve 32GB quad-rank PC3L-8500 kits, which run at 800MHz once both slots on every channel are filled
- Maximum unbuffered: 48GB on twelve 4GB kits, which hold 1333MHz at two DIMMs per channel
- Factory standard: 6GB as three 2GB Registered DIMMs, against a documented minimum of 2GB installed
- Protection modes: Advanced ECC multi-bit error protection, plus Mirroring and Lock-Step — both of which need channel 3 left empty — and Online Spare on Intel Xeon 5600 series processors
Capacity and clock pull against each other on this blade. The quad-rank 32GB Registered kits are the only route to 384GB, and they run at 800MHz once both slots on a channel are filled. The 8GB dual-rank kits hold 1333MHz at the same population but stop at 96GB, and Unbuffered memory, which keeps 1333MHz throughout, tops out at 48GB.
Should you fit Registered or Unbuffered DIMMs?
| Registered (RDIMM) | Unbuffered (UDIMM) | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum capacity | 384GB | 48GB |
| Kit sizes stocked | 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB | 1GB, 2GB, 4GB |
| Speed with all twelve slots filled | 800MHz on the quad-rank 16GB and 32GB kits | 1333MHz |
| Mixing with the other type | Not supported | Not supported |
Capacity and clock pull against each other here. Registered is the only route past 48GB, but the quad-rank kits that get you there fall to 800MHz once both slots on a channel are filled, while the 8GB dual-rank kits hold 1333MHz at the same population and stop at 96GB. Unbuffered keeps 1333MHz throughout and is worth buying only to top up a blade that already runs it, since converting means replacing every module.
Choosing the Right BL460c G7 Memory
- Check which type is fitted before ordering. Registered and Unbuffered cannot be mixed, so one wrong module is not a slower blade, it is a blade that will not post.
- Every HPE DDR3 option kit here is a single DIMM. A 96GB upgrade is twelve 8GB kits, not one boxed set.
- Low-voltage DIMMs need Intel Xeon 5600 series processors. Mixing DIMM voltages is allowed, but the whole bank then runs at 1.5V.
- Load heaviest first. HPE populates quad-rank before dual-rank before single-rank within a channel, with the heaviest DIMM furthest from the processor, and the white slots before the rest.
- One slow module slows the blade. Mixing speeds is permitted, but the memory bus drops to the slowest DIMM in the server, even when that DIMM sits on the other processor.

A second processor is what makes the other six slots usable, and the processor also caps the clock — see BL460c G7 processors before settling on a speed. BL460c G7 Memory FAQ
What is the maximum memory in a BL460c G7?
384GB, using twelve 32GB quad-rank Registered DIMMs in a two-processor blade. A blade with one processor fitted reaches half of that, because only six of the twelve slots are available.
Can I mix Registered and Unbuffered memory in a BL460c G7?
No. HPE's population guidelines say not to mix UDIMMs with RDIMMs. Whichever type is fitted today is what an upgrade has to match, and converting a blade means replacing every module in it.
How many memory slots does the BL460c G7 have?
Twelve: three channels per processor with two DIMM slots on each channel, six channels per blade. DIMMs should not be installed in slots whose processor is not fitted.
Why does my BL460c G7 memory run at 800MHz?
The quad-rank 16GB and 32GB Registered kits run at 1066MHz with one DIMM per channel and drop to 800MHz when both slots on a channel are filled. Dual-rank 8GB and smaller kits hold 1333MHz at the same population.
Can I use PC3L low-voltage memory in a BL460c G7?
Yes, with Intel Xeon 5600 series processors. By default low-voltage DIMMs run at 1.5V and 1333MHz in a two DIMM per channel configuration, and RBSU can switch them to 1.35V and 1066MHz for the power saving.
Do I have to fill all twelve slots?
No, but balance what you fit. HPE asks for total capacity to be balanced across both processors, for channels to be loaded similarly where possible, and for the white slots to be populated first.
