How to Choose the Right HPE ProLiant Memory

The correct HPE memory for your server is determined by its generation and, in some cases, its processor. Gen8 servers use DDR3 memory, while Gen9 servers moved to DDR4. Gen10 servers also use DDR4, but the supported speed depends on the CPU installed: servers with 1st Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors support DDR4-2666, while servers with 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors support DDR4-2933 — which is why we separate Gen10 memory into two categories above. Gen10 Plus servers step up to DDR4-3200, and the newest Gen11 and Gen12 ProLiant servers use DDR5 memory. If you're unsure which processor your Gen10 server has, the CPU model number on your original order or in iLO will tell you.

RDIMM vs. LRDIMM

Most HPE ProLiant configurations use Registered DIMMs (RDIMMs), which balance capacity, speed, and cost for the widest range of workloads. Load Reduced DIMMs (LRDIMMs) buffer the data lines as well as the command lines, allowing higher total memory capacities in servers running large in-memory databases or dense virtualization. RDIMMs and LRDIMMs cannot be mixed in the same server, so match the type already installed when adding memory to an existing system.

If you're searching for a specific part number, matching the base number is what matters.

The DL380 Gen10 (like the DL360 Gen10) uses DDR4 Registered Smart Memory. Servers configured with 1st Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors support DDR4-2666 memory, while those with 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors support DDR4-2933 memory.

Is the memory you sell new and genuine HPE?

Yes. Every memory kit in this category is new, factory-original genuine HPE memory. We do not sell third-party or compatible-brand modules.

Can I mix RDIMM and LRDIMM memory in the same server?

No. HPE ProLiant servers do not support mixing Registered DIMMs and Load Reduced DIMMs. All installed modules must be the same type, and for best performance HPE recommends populating channels with matching kits.

Do HPE Gen11 and Gen12 servers use DDR4 memory?

No. Gen11 and Gen12 ProLiant servers use DDR5 memory exclusively. DDR4 and DDR5 modules are not interchangeable — they are keyed differently and will not fit in the same slots.
