HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10 Processors

Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant ML350 Gen10, new and refurbished. The tower takes up to two Intel Xeon Scalable processors on the Intel C622 chipset, and one rule frames every order: HPE does not allow two different processor models in one server, so a second CPU has to match the first exactly.

ML350 Gen10 Processor Specifications

  • Sockets: two, on the Intel C622 chipset, each with its own twelve DIMM slots and its own four PCIe expansion slots
  • Kits listed here: Intel Second Generation Xeon Scalable, Bronze 3200 through Platinum 8200, including the Refresh parts with the R suffix
  • Range: from four cores at 105W to 28 cores at 205W, with up to 38.5MB of L3 cache, and clocks from 1.9GHz to 3.9GHz
  • Suffix decoder: L addresses 4.5TB per socket and M 2TB, where an unsuffixed part addresses 1TB; N is tuned for network function virtualisation, V for virtual machine density, Y for Speed Select and R for Refresh
  • Generations do not mix: HPE states that field upgrades from first generation processors (x1xx) to second generation processors (x2xx) are not supported
  • Kit contents: every processor kit comes complete with heatsink and fans; parts above 85W use a performance heatsink

A second processor does far more than add cores. Twelve of the 24 DIMM slots and four of the eight PCIe slots are wired to the second socket and are unavailable without it. It must be the same model as the first, because HPE does not allow two different processor models in one server — and a 2P configuration also requires the Redundant Fan Cage Kit, taking the fan count to six.

Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum?

SeriesExampleMemory speedSuits
Bronze 32003204, 1.9GHz 6-core, 85W2133 MT/sFile and print, light infrastructure roles
Silver 42004210R, 2.4GHz 10-core, 100W2400 MT/sGeneral application hosting on a budget
Gold 52005218R, 2.1GHz 20-core, 125W2666 MT/sCore count without the top-tier power draw
Gold 62006248R, 3.0GHz 24-core, 205W2933 MT/s at one DIMM per channelVirtualisation and databases
Platinum 82008280, 2.7GHz 28-core, 205W2933 MT/s at one DIMM per channelThe largest core counts and memory tiers

The series decides the memory clock as firmly as it decides the cores. A Bronze 3204 holds DDR4 to 2133 MT/s and a Silver 4210R to 2400 MT/s no matter what modules go in, so on those machines the money is better spent on cores than on fast DIMMs. Wattage is the other half of the choice: a two-processor tower at 205W each is a different power and cooling budget from two 85W parts, and HPE requires the Redundant Fan Cage Kit on every 2P configuration regardless.

Choosing the Right ML350 Gen10 Processor

  • A second processor must match the first. HPE does not allow two different processor models in one server, so an upgrade to two CPUs means two of the same kit unless the existing one is being replaced.
  • A second processor unlocks half the machine. Twelve of the 24 DIMM slots and four of the eight PCIe slots arrive only with it.
  • The generations are a one-way door. HPE does not support a field upgrade from a first generation x1xx part to a second generation x2xx part, so a first generation tower stays on that generation and on its DDR4-2666 memory.
  • Two processors means a fan order. HPE requires the Redundant Fan Cage Kit on 2P configurations, bringing the fan count to six.
  • Check the thermal note on the fastest parts. HPE documents specific ambient limits for the Gold 6256 and 6250, which are not supported at the optimal cooling setting at all.

ML350 Gen10 Processors FAQ

Which processors does the ML350 Gen10 support?
Up to two Intel Xeon Scalable processors. The kits listed for this server are Intel Second Generation parts, from the Bronze 3204 at six cores to the Platinum 8280 at 28 cores, with Silver and Gold series in between.

Can I mix different processors in an ML350 Gen10?
No. HPE states that mixing two different processor models is not allowed, so both sockets must carry the same part.

Can a first generation ML350 Gen10 be upgraded to second generation processors?
No. HPE states that field upgrades from first generation processors (x1xx) to second generation processors (x2xx) are not supported, and the two generations also take different DDR4 grades.

Does adding a second processor do anything besides add cores?
Yes, and it is often the real reason. Twelve of the 24 DIMM slots and four of the eight PCIe expansion slots are wired to the second socket and are unavailable without it.

What do the letters after the model number mean?
They are Intel's tier suffixes. L addresses 4.5TB per socket and M 2TB against a 1TB baseline; N is optimised for network function virtualisation, V for virtual machine density, Y for Speed Select and R marks a Refresh part.

Do ML350 Gen10 processor kits include a heatsink?
Yes. Every processor kit listed for this server comes complete with heatsink and fans, and parts above 85W use a performance heatsink.
