HPE ProLiant ML110 G7 Hard Drives
Genuine HPE hard drives for the HPE ProLiant ML110 G7, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. The tower holds four internal 3.5-inch drives, non-hot-plug on the entry and base models, and two things decide what will actually work in it: the drive cage fitted to the chassis, and whether there is a SAS controller in front of the backplane.

- Maximum internal storage: 16.0TB on four 4TB LFF SATA drives, 8.0TB on four 2TB LFF SAS, or 8.0TB on eight 1TB SFF SAS
- Interface: 3G SATA and 6G SAS; the embedded Smart Array B110i handles up to four 3.0Gb/s SATA drives only, so SAS of any size needs a Smart Array SAS controller
- Hot-plug licensing: HPE requires the Smart Array Hot Plug Advance Pack for B110i on any hot-plug system, in addition to the drive cage kit
The controller gates this more tightly than the cage does. The embedded Smart Array B110i handles four 3.0Gb/s SATA drives and nothing else, so a SAS drive of any capacity needs a Smart Array SAS card in front of it, and a hot-plug configuration needs HPE's Hot Plug Advance Pack licence as well as the drive cage kit. Four LFF bays reach 16.0TB; eight SFF bays reach 8.0TB.

On this tower the large bays hold the capacity and the small bays hold the count: four 3.5-inch SATA drives reach 16.0TB, while eight 2.5-inch SAS drives reach half of that. Check the controller before either, because it gates more than the cage does — the embedded B110i drives four SATA disks and nothing else, so a SAS drive of any capacity needs a Smart Array SAS card in front of it, and a hot-plug configuration needs HPE's Hot Plug Advance Pack licence as well as the cage itself.
Choosing the Right ML110 G7 Hard Drive
- Settle LFF or SFF, and hot-plug or not, first. The cage the machine carries decides which carrier will seat, and the front of the chassis answers it in a glance.
- SAS is a controller decision, not a drive decision. HPE states that support for SAS hard drives and tape drives requires a SAS controller, and that non-hot-plug SAS drives need one too.
- Match the whole storage path. HPE notes that the drive, the controller and the firmware should operate at the same data transfer rate, or system bandwidth is negotiated down to a level all of them accept.
- Enterprise SAS for duty cycle, midline SATA for bulk. The SAS drives listed for this server run at 10K and 15K rpm; the SATA parts are 7.2K rpm midline and entry drives, and they are where the large capacities sit.

How many hard drives does an ML110 G7 hold?
Four internal 3.5-inch drives as standard. With HPE's 4U SFF hot-plug drive cage kit, which the QuickSpecs documents as a field upgrade, the chassis takes eight 2.5-inch drives instead.
What is the maximum storage capacity of an ML110 G7?
16.0TB, on four 4TB 3.5-inch SATA drives. On SAS the ceiling is 8.0TB, either four 2TB LFF drives or eight 1TB SFF drives.
Can I put SAS drives in an ML110 G7?
Only with a SAS controller fitted. HPE states that support for SAS hard drives requires a SAS controller; the embedded Smart Array B110i is SATA only.
Are ML110 G7 drives hot-plug?
It depends on the model. The entry and base models shipped non-hot-plug 3.5-inch drives. A hot-plug configuration needs one of the 4U drive cage kits and HPE's Smart Array Hot Plug Advance Pack for B110i.
How many drives can the embedded B110i controller handle?
Four, and SATA at 3.0Gb/s only. A fifth drive, or any SAS drive, means adding a Smart Array SAS controller.
