Four onboard Gigabit ports go a long way on a consolidation host, and the honest first question is whether the traffic actually needs more bandwidth or just more separation — which four ports and VLANs already provide. Where 10 Gigabit is genuinely the answer, plan for two cards at most and check the memory budget: HPE asks for 2GB of server memory per adapter on top of whatever the workload wants.
Choosing the Right DL585 G7 Network Adapter
- Two 10GbE adapters is the ceiling. A third card in a spare slot is outside what HPE supports, regardless of how many slots are free.
- Budget memory for 10 Gigabit. Each 10GbE adapter calls for a minimum of 2GB of server memory, which on a lightly populated two-processor machine is not free.
- Cables and transceivers are separate. SFP+ cards ship bare: direct attach copper for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones.
- Match the media, not just the speed. An SFP+ card and a 10GBASE-T switch port will not connect without the right optics between them.
- Slots are full length and full height. Low-profile cards from a 1U or 2U server are the wrong shape for the risers in this chassis.
