HPE ProLiant BL460c G7 Hard Drives

Genuine HPE hot-plug drives for the HPE ProLiant BL460c G7, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. The blade has two 2.5-inch small form factor bays, and one rule settles the order before capacity does: SAS, SATA and solid state drives cannot be mixed within the blade, so both bays carry the same kind of drive.

BL460c G7 Drive Specifications

  • Bays: two hot-plug small form factor (2.5-inch) bays, taking SAS, SATA or solid state drives
  • Interface: 6Gb/s SAS and 3Gb/s SATA, presented by the embedded Smart Array P410i
  • Maximum hard disk capacity: 2.0TB, as two 1TB SAS drives or two 1TB SATA drives
  • Solid state ceiling: 1.6TB on two 800GB SAS SSDs, or 800GB on two 400GB SATA SSDs
  • Mixing: not supported — SAS, SATA and solid state drives cannot be combined in one blade
  • Warranty: HPE ships these drives with either a one year or a three year warranty, with the enterprise SAS parts on three years and the midline parts on one

Both bays have to carry the same kind of drive. HPE does not support mixing SAS, SATA and solid state drives within one BL460c G7, so a drive here is really half of a pair. Two bays also cap the array at RAID 0 or RAID 1 on the embedded Smart Array P410i, and mirroring halves whatever capacity you fit.

Which drives fit a two-bay blade?

Drive familyInterfaceBoth bays filled
SAS enterprise, 10K and 15K rpm6Gb/s SAS1.8TB on two 900GB drives
SAS midline, 7.2K rpm6Gb/s SAS2.0TB on two 1TB drives
SATA midline, 7.2K rpm3Gb/s SATA2.0TB on two 1TB drives
SATA solid state3Gb/s SATA800GB on two 400GB drives

The platform's 1.6TB solid state ceiling needs two 800GB 6G SAS SSDs, and the solid state drives listed below this description are SATA parts, so 800GB is the practical solid state maximum here. Everything else follows from having two bays: spindle count is fixed, the only levers are capacity per drive and whether you mirror, and RAID 1 across both bays halves whichever number you land on.

Choosing the Right BL460c G7 Hard Drive

  • Buy drives as a pair from one family. Mixing SAS, SATA and solid state is not supported, so dropping a spare SATA disk in beside a SAS drive is not a configuration HPE recognises.
  • Match the whole storage path. HPE notes that the drive, the controller, the firmware and the backplane should run at the same transfer rate, or the system negotiates down to the slowest of them.
  • SAS gets the faster link on this blade. The P410i runs SAS at 6Gb/s and SATA at 3Gb/s, so a SATA drive sits on the slower path whatever it is rated for.
  • Enterprise or midline is a duty-cycle decision. The 10K and 15K enterprise SAS drives carry a three year warranty; the 7.2K midline drives carry one year and are there for capacity per pound.
  • Empty bays are a configuration, not a fault. HPE lists drive options as not required on a drive-less model, so a used blade that arrives with nothing in the bays was ordered that way.

The bays are fed by the embedded Smart Array P410i, so the choice on BL460c G7 storage controllers is cache rather than card. Also available: BL460c G7 memory and processors, or the full BL460c G7 parts listing, which also carries the SB40c storage blade and the IO Accelerator mezzanine options. Adjacent generations: BL460c G6 drives and BL460c Gen8 drives. Background reading: SAS vs SATA hard drives, choosing the right spindle speed and the HPE parts by server model index.

BL460c G7 Hard Drives FAQ

How many hard drives does a BL460c G7 hold?
Two. The blade has two hot-plug 2.5-inch small form factor bays at the front, and there is no drive cage option that adds more.

Can I mix SAS and SATA drives in a BL460c G7?
No. HPE states that SAS, SATA and solid state drives cannot be mixed within the server, so both bays have to carry the same kind of drive.

What is the maximum storage capacity of a BL460c G7?
2.0TB internally, as two 1TB SAS or two 1TB SATA hot-plug drives. The solid state figures are 1.6TB on two 800GB SAS SSDs and 800GB on two 400GB SATA SSDs.

Do SATA drives run slower in this blade?
On the interface, yes. The embedded Smart Array P410i presents 6Gb/s for SAS and 3Gb/s for SATA, so a SATA drive is on the slower link regardless of the drive's own rating.

Can I run RAID 5 on a BL460c G7?
No. The embedded P410i supports RAID 0 and RAID 1, and with two bays there is nowhere for a third member to go. Mirroring across both bays is the redundant option.

Why did my BL460c G7 arrive with no drives?
Because that is a supported configuration. HPE lists the hard drive options as not required when configuring a drive-less model, so blades are often built and sold with both bays empty.
