This is a boot device rather than a storage subsystem, and the ceiling makes that plain: 960GB is the whole of one server's internal capacity, which on an Apollo 8000 assumes the working data lives out on the InfiniBand fabric. HPE repeats its standard warning here too, that the drive, the controller, the firmware and the backplane should operate at the same data transfer rate or the system negotiates down.
Choosing the Right XL730f Gen9 Drive
- Order in pairs and match the size. HPE allows none or at most two SSD kits per server tray, requires them to be ordered in pairs, and states that both SSDs in a tray must be the same size.
- Budget for the enablement kit. One XL7x0f Solid State Drive Enablement Kit is called for per drive, so a drive on its own is only part of the job.
- Do not plan a hot swap. One of the two listed drives is documented as non hot-plug, and with only the SUV port pluggable from the front, a replacement means pulling a liquid-cooled tray and breaking its dry-disconnect couplings.
- You may not need a drive at all. The tray carries an internal microSD slot and an internal USB port, and defaults to UEFI boot mode, so an operating system image has somewhere to live without spending the SSD position.
- Removable media is external only. HPE supports diskette and optical drives on this server through USB on the SUV port and nowhere else.
