On a two-socket ProLiant this choice is mostly taste. On a DL120 Gen9 it is arithmetic: with a single low-profile slot as standard, a storage controller and a network card do not both fit until a riser is in the machine. That is the decision to make before choosing a card — and if the server already runs an H240 or a P440 in its one slot, a FlexibleLOM on its own riser is how the networking gets added without evicting the storage.
Choosing the Right DL120 Gen9 Network Adapter
- Check the slot before the card. One low-profile PCIe slot is standard; a full-height card needs the third slot on the appropriate riser, and a FlexibleLOM needs its own riser kit.
- Two ports may already be enough. The embedded 361i gives two Gigabit ports, so a card earns its slot when the need is 10 Gigabit, fibre, or more than two ports.
- Budget the memory for 10GbE. HPE calls for at least 2GB of server memory for each 10 Gigabit adapter fitted, which is a real constraint on an eight-slot server running a small memory configuration.
- Cables and transceivers are separate. SFP+ cards ship bare: direct attach copper for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones.
- Match the media, not just the speed. A 560SFP+ card and a 10GBASE-T switch port will not connect; the RJ-45 equivalents on this server are the 530T and 561T.
