The sixteen slots behind an empty socket cannot be used. A one-processor BL620c G7 works with sixteen RDIMMs and stops at 512GB; the second processor is what opens the rest of the 32 slots. Reaching the full 1.0TB also means pulling the four 8GB modules the blade shipped with — keep them and the ceiling is 832GB.

The gap between 832GB and 1.0TB is the four 8GB modules the blade left the factory with: reaching the ceiling means pulling them, not adding to them. Everything above 512GB also assumes a second processor, because the sixteen slots behind an empty socket cannot be populated at all.
Choosing the Right BL620c G7 Memory
- Buy in pairs. RDIMMs are installed in pairs with identical characteristics, and HPE recommends identical part numbers throughout the blade for configuration simplicity. Every option kit here is a single RDIMM, so a pair is two kits.
- Spread capacity across both sockets. In a two-processor blade, HPE asks that the total be distributed between the processors as evenly as possible; the minimum working configuration is two RDIMMs on processor 1.
- Larger modules will not buy you clock. Speed follows the processor's QPI rating, so a blade capped at 978MHz or 800MHz stays there whatever the module rating on the label.
- Mixed ranks go in a set order. When ranks differ within a socket, the modules with the highest rank count belong in the white connectors, so the heavier electrical load sits at the end of the channel.
- Mixing 1.5V and 1.35V costs the saving. Standard DDR3 and low-voltage DDR3L RDIMMs may share a socket, but every module on that socket then runs at 1.5V.
